REVIEW
Overall Comments:
What a view! It blew us away when we inspected the Istana. No surprise that this particular villa is so popular for weddings and functions. The setting is magical. The villa itself is also excellent. Rooms are very spacious and nicely designed. Everything works well, which is no mean feat given the hostile coastal environment. To a certain extent the villa is a victim of its own success as a ‘venue’, with much geared towards functions – kitchens not really set up for guest use (not that you need to go in them!), large-scale car parking and a huge entourage of staff. As a result the feel is a little commercial, like a mini private hotel. That's not to say this isn't a fabulous place to holiday – it is, and anybody staying here will have a fabulous time. If you do get to the kitchens check out the chef’s little garden full of chillies, melons, tomatoes and just tonnes of basil. The villa does operate a restaurant style menu but they are also happy to work a grocery +30% system. We loved the cliff top balé – a fabulous place for a BBQ, sundowners and watching the surfers in the truly turquoise waters below. Pricy but priceless.

Highlight:
No surprise here – very rarely in life does one get to experience a setting like this. The Istana has a truly uninterrupted panoramic view. The sunsets are absolutely sensational. You could be staying in a shack and this place would be superb – of course it helps that The Istana is an outstanding villa in its own right!
Surprises:
Cliff top means cliff top – there is a 60 m drop down to the sea below. The edge does not have fencing to ruin that magical view but is protected by a wide bed of extremely sharp and very uninviting ground shrubs. If you have kids (and this is a great place for kids) then keep an eye on them. One of the many staff will help here as well if directed. Also as the villa is open to the Indian Ocean - when she blows she blows…

DESTINATION
Surrounding area:
The Istana is isolated but such is the service and facilities, there is no real reason to venture out. Uluwatu Temple is worth seeing 2 kms down the road and it is worth venturing down to Suluban Beach but best at low tide, alternatively try Padang Padang Beach (2 km) which is one of the best in the area.
